Meridian Council Approves $15,000 Jumbotron Sponsorship for High School Wildcats

The Meridian City Council voted to contribute $15,000 to the Meridian High School Wildcats for a 2026-2027 jumbotron sponsorship.

At the council's regular meeting Aug. 18, 2026, members approved an order described in the minutes as an "ORDER AUTHORIZING CONTRIBUTION IN THE AMOUNT OF $15,000.00 TO THE MERIDIAN HIGH SCHOOL WILDCATS FOR 2026-2027 JUMBOTRON SPONSORSHIP." The measure was offered by Councilman Brewer and seconded by Councilman Tims.

The order passed with Brewer, Davis, Tims and Hill voting in favor. Councilwoman Walker is recorded in the minutes as present but not voting yea or nay. The minutes do not specify which city fund the money will come from or detail any sponsorship contract terms attached to the payment.

The $15,000 commitment represents a discretionary use of public money, raising questions about who proposed it, which account it draws from, and under what authority the council is funding sponsorship of a school athletics display. Such line items are the kind of spending commonly flagged for itemization rather than routine approval, though the minutes as released do not resolve those details.
