Vicksburg - New Downtown Tax District Created
Vicksburg Board Creates Downtown Taxing District, Sets New Tax Rate
The Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted unanimously to establish a downtown taxing district and set a new tax rate for the area.
At its Sept. 15 meeting, the board took up a measure to "Adopt a Resolution to Establish Downtown Taxing District and Set Downtown Tax Rate," according to the board's minutes. The motion was made by Alderman Thomas Mayfield and seconded by Alderwoman Vickie Y. Bailey. It passed 3-0, with Mayor Willis T. Thompson concurring.
The minutes do not specify the tax rate or the boundaries of the new district; those details are contained in an attached resolution that was not included with the minutes made public.
The creation of a taxing district gives the city a new, ongoing claim on downtown property owners that exists outside the annual budget process. Because the minutes do not spell out the rate, the boundaries or the stated purpose of the district, those figures will need to be confirmed against the underlying resolution before downtown property owners can gauge the full financial impact of the board's action.
