Transport Commissioner on $500Mn Federal Grant
A Mississippi Transportation Commission member said an $89 million federal highway grant tied to a $500 million project had not been adequately explained to commissioners before it moved forward.
Commissioner John Caldwell raised the concern during the commission's regular meeting Aug. 26. "I don't think it was presented to the commission well for an $89 million grant for a $500 million project," Caldwell said. Staff later described the project as an Interstate 20 central-district enhancement.
Caldwell also asked staff how many federal grant applications MDOT currently has pending. Staff said they did not have the number immediately available but confirmed later in the meeting that seven applications were outstanding. Staff added that no grant can advance without commission approval.
The exchange came as the commission conducted its routine business overseeing federal funding requests. Large grant awards, particularly ones of this size tied to major infrastructure spending, are the kind of decisions where commissioners' ability to track staff figures and explanations in real time becomes a point of scrutiny, as staff's initial inability to state the number of pending applications illustrated during the meeting.
