Greenwood Leflore school board attorney says governor may call special session on redistricting
The school district's attorney told trustees the governor's office has signaled a special legislative session could come around Thanksgiving to redraw Mississippi's district lines.
At the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District Board of Trustees' regular meeting September 1, the board's attorney, identified as Attorney Simmons, gave trustees a legislative update after being called on by the board chair. "So we are waiting on the governor to call us back for a special session," Simmons said. "The indication we have received from his office is going to be the week before Thanksgiving or the week after Thanksgiving." Simmons told the board the session's agenda "will be to redistrict our congressional districts, our Supreme Court districts, as well as our legislative districts around the state of Mississippi."
Simmons presented the information as secondhand, relayed from the governor's office rather than a direct statement from Gov. Tate Reeves.
If it occurs, a special session redrawing congressional, state Supreme Court and legislative boundaries would be a major statewide governance action extending well beyond the school district. Because the account came through board counsel rather than the governor's office directly, the timing and scope remain unconfirmed.
