Residents Petition Rezoning - Diamondhead
Diamondhead commission recommends rezoning more than 100 acres despite resident petitions
The Diamondhead Planning & Zoning Commission voted Sept. 23 to recommend rezoning more than 100 acres along the new Park Ten Drive extension and Nama Drive from residential to commercial and mixed-use districts.
The vote came during a public hearing on joint rezoning applications filed by Terra Corp, Parcel Corp and the City of Diamondhead. Residents of the adjacent Oaks subdivision had submitted petitions opposing the change, signed by 51 and 57 residents on two of the case files, according to the meeting record. Addressing those objections, the presiding commissioner said, "I think the recommendation we would make to address their concerns would be yes to conventional commercial district, but with respect to that property that is immediately adjacent to water district, there can be no long-term residential there." Commissioners added that condition barring long-term residential development on parcels next to the city's water and sewer treatment plant before advancing the applications.
The rezoning, covering land used for residential purposes, now heads to the Diamondhead City Council for a final vote Oct. 6. The commission's compromise conditions are part of the public record the council will consider.
