Madison County Sheriff reports $2.1 million recovered in fraud case

The Madison County Sheriff told the Board of Supervisors that more than $2.1 million of a $2.7 million fraud case has been recovered through work with the Mississippi Attorney General's office.

At the board's meeting, the sheriff said Chairman Stein had asked for an update on the investigation. "Well, to put it very simply, Chairman Stein asked me to provide the public and this board with the latest information regarding the investigation into the $2.7 million fraud case we were involved in. As you know, we worked with the Attorney General's office and were able to recover a little over $2.1 million of that money," the sheriff said. The sheriff added that a suspect has been identified and the case is moving toward indictment, with additional victims believed to exist.

The case falls within the broader category of public accountability matters involving the loss and recovery of public money through law enforcement action. Because the investigation remains active, the dollar figures are large, and an indictment is expected, officials indicated the matter will continue to be tracked by the sheriff's office and the Attorney General's office.
