Leflore Board Members Discuss Audit of $200k Payment

Leflore County board member reports altered minute-book letters, state audit of $200,000 payment

A Leflore County Board of Supervisors member told fellow board members last Monday that letters recorded in the county's official minute books appear to have been altered, and that the State Auditor's office is investigating whether the county illegally gave $200,000 to a city.

At the board's regular meeting on September 29, 2026, the board member, whose identity was not confirmed in the meeting record, described being contacted by an auditor's office investigator. "The audit department called me to request the information... he said that he received two anonymous phone calls that Leflore County illegally gave it $200,000. And he did say illegally," the board member said. He said he is responsible for signing board minutes and is "held liable" for them, and that one letter he signed differs from the version now on file in the county's minute book. He also said a second payment of $100,000 lacks supporting documentation in the official record. No resolution was reached, and the board took no vote on the matter at the meeting.

The discrepancies center on minute book pages the board member referenced during his remarks, though the specific city that received the funds was not confirmed in the meeting transcript. The current status of any formal State Auditor investigation, and the identity of the investigator who contacted the board member, also were not confirmed.

A sitting board member raising concerns about altered official minutes, paired with word of an active state inquiry into a $200,000 payment, touches on the integrity of the county's broader financial record, since discrepancies in that record can affect confidence in other transactions the board has approved.
