Greenwood Leflore schools acknowledge federal funding compliance failure

By The Wire  ·   ·

GREENWOOD - The Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District's finance office told trustees the district previously failed to meet a federal special-education funding requirement.

At the board's September 1 regular meeting, a district finance officer identified in meeting records as Ms. Jones, whose full title has not been confirmed, told trustees the district had fallen short of "maintenance of effort," or MOE, standards. "If you all recall, 2024, 2025, we received a letter that we did not meet MOE, maintenance of effort," she said. She raised the issue while presenting an amended fiscal 2027 budget she said was needed partly to show compliance going forward.

Maintenance of effort is a federal condition attached to special-education funding. A district found not to have met it faces potential clawback of funds or restrictions on future awards. It was not stated what amount of funding is at risk or whether corrective steps have been completed.
