Wildlife Grant Funds Skate Park
Picayune Council Accepts $120,000 State Grant For Skate Park
The Picayune City Council voted unanimously Oct. 7 to accept a state recreational trails grant and commit local matching funds toward a new skate park.
During the meeting’s Grant Administration item, a speaker identified in meeting records as Lisa Albritton read the request “to consider the request for acceptance of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) Recreational Trails Program grant, project number 26 RTP 400, in the amount of $120,000 for the Picayune Skate Park and approve a mandatory contribution of $30,000 (20% local co-financing) towards the total project cost of $150,000.” Her identification as the reader of the item has not been independently confirmed. The council approved the measure unanimously, with the motion made by Councilman Hickman and seconded by Councilwoman Bumpers.
City staff told the council a local group organizing the skate park is seeking private donations and a separate regional foundation grant to help offset the city’s $30,000 share.
The approval logs a specific public expenditure — a $120,000 state award paired with a required city match — the kind of dollar-figure commitment municipal spending records are meant to track regardless of project size.
