West Point board approves school tax levy increase to cover budget shortfall
The West Point Mayor and Board of Selectmen voted Sept. 9 to approve a resolution from the West Point Consolidated School District seeking a roughly 4% increase in its tax levy.
The presiding officer, addressed only as "Mr. Mayor" during the meeting, told the board "the board is being asked to approve a resolution that was sent over by the board of trustees from the West Point Consolidated School District to levy taxes to raise money to operate the school district." He said the district's request was intended to cover a forecast $355,000 shortfall, and that state law leaves the city no discretion to refuse a request that falls within the district's statutory cap.
Officials estimated the increase would raise the school millage from 51 back toward 54 mills, reversing a reduction made last year, when rising property valuations had allowed the rate to drop without a loss of revenue to the district. Final figures await county property valuations, which the city said it had not yet received.
The vote illustrates how school funding requests translate directly into local tax bills, with city officials noting they are legally bound to approve levies within the district's set limits regardless of the impact on residents' tax bills.
