Tupelo City Council approves $266,000 general fund increase, driven by rising jail costs

TUPELO — The Tupelo City Council on Aug. 4 approved a $266,000 increase to the city's general fund, driven largely by rising jail costs, along with a separate increase to the capital and infrastructure fund for property purchases.

Presenting the amendment, a city finance officer told the council, "180,000 would be used for the police department. Our rising cost have affected the police department's budget. This is specifically for the prisoner care budget which we have very little control over." The council also approved shifting $275,000 in land-sale proceeds and $45,754 from the city's blight fund toward property purchases. The amendment passed without discussion.
