Thalia Mara Hall - where did the rent go?

Councilman questions zero rent revenue at Thalia Mara Hall, vendor contract

A Jackson city councilman used a Sept. 10 budget hearing to question why the renovated Thalia Mara Hall is budgeted for zero dollars in rent despite months of sold-out events.

Councilman Foot told the council the city spent "several million dollars" with state help to fix up the hall, "and then we got a zero for the rent line." He said some city contracts "looked like they were negotiated for the benefit of the vendor, not for the benefit of the citizens," pointing specifically to a vendor identified as Smith Wheels. "Where does that Smith Wheels show up on our revenue line? I don't know. But they're supposed to be paying us 400,000 a year or something like that," Foot said.

City officials at the hearing said they would need to review the underlying agreements before responding to the claims.

The exchange touched on broader questions of public money and contract oversight, as council members pressed for accountability over how city-run venues and vendor deals are tracked in Jackson's budget documents.
