Surveillance Contract Will Not Be Renewed - Jackson
Jackson Police Won't Renew Flock License-Plate Camera Contract
The city's police chief told a City Council committee the department will not continue its contract with Flock Safety and will instead look at other license-plate-reader systems.
At the Jackson City Council's Public Safety Committee meeting on October 14, 2026, the department's chief said, "we are not renewing our flock we are not renewing flock we are though going to have to look at license plate reader systems." The statement came during committee discussion of the city's camera program and followed weeks of public concern over surveillance and data-sharing tied to the Flock Safety network. The chief did not specify when the current contract expires or what system might replace it.
The Flock cameras were approved by the council in September 2024 on a 5-0 vote, with one member absent, according to discussion at the meeting.
The decision comes amid broader scrutiny in Mississippi of license-plate-reader networks as a government-overreach concern, and marks a city reversing course on a surveillance tool after sustained public pushback. It could serve as a precedent for other Mississippi municipalities weighing similar Flock contracts, as officials nationally have faced criticism over officer misuse of such systems.
