STARKVILLE — The Starkville Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted Aug. 5 to approve a fire department restructuring plan that adds three firefighters and creates a new assistant fire chief position, over the objection of Vice Mayor Perkins. Fire Chief Davis told the board the changes are meant to offset overtime costs the department says have run roughly $350,000 since October. Perkins argued the department's existing battalion-chief command structure was sufficient, telling the board the assistant chief position "is going to cost this the city approximately $22,800 additionally annually," and that there was no guarantee the restructuring would save money. The board approved the plan.
