Starkville Employee Heath Fund Reserve Depleted by Large Claims
By Mississippi Wire · July 27, 2026 ·
STARKVILLE — Starkville officials disclosed last week that the city's self-insured employee health fund reserve has fallen from roughly $1.2 million to about $600,000 over the past year, driven by a string of unusually large claims.
"We had a health insurance reserve of about 1.2 million. It's down to about 600,000 because of those large claims," a presiding official told the Board of Aldermen during a budget work session.
The city is proposing a health insurance budget increase to help rebuild the reserve toward a recommended $800,000 to $1 million cushion.
