PSC Approves Energy Mississippi Rate Filing Despite Unresolved Figures

The Mississippi Public Service Commission approved Energy Mississippi LLC's notice of intent to modernize rates on Sept. 2, despite unanswered questions about discrepancies in the company's figures.

During discussion of Agenda Item 3, Docket 2014-UN1-132, a commissioner pressed the company on inconsistent numbers in a memo. "So in the memo it states that the U parent frame up offset fell below 10.2 million to 9.7 and says it's $700,000 change. That's actually 500. Which figure is right? And how does 8.3 million total reconcile?" the commissioner asked. According to the wire account of the meeting, the company's legal counsel said she was unfamiliar with the assumptions referenced in the memo.

The commission nonetheless voted unanimously to approve the filing, which the company said would support economic development and power procurement.

The exchange left the arithmetic behind the rate change unresolved even as regulators signed off on it. The discrepancy — a $200,000 gap between the figure cited in the memo and the one the commissioner calculated — was not addressed before the vote, leaving the reconciliation of the docket's underlying numbers as unfinished business.
