NATCHEZ — A motion to freeze cash overtime pay for city employees, including police and fire personnel, failed on a 2-3 vote of the Natchez Board of Aldermen this week amid a dispute over the police department's overtime budget. "I am making a motion that we freeze all overtime cash pay and allow compensatory time for hours worked beyond regular hours until the end of the 2026 fiscal year," the alderwoman who introduced the motion told the board, citing budget constraints.
Other board members argued the freeze would tie the hands of the police and fire chiefs during emergencies. One alderman said his original concern was overtime paid to supervisors making $60,000 base salary, which he said could push their annual pay to $70,000-$75,000.
