Natchez approves $500,000 state agreement for bridge lighting project

The Natchez Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a second $500,000 agreement with the Mississippi Department of Finance and Administration to fund lighting for the Mississippi River Bridge.

At the Oct. 28 meeting, Mayor Dan Gibson told the board the funding draws on Senate Bill 2189 local-improvement money, the same source used for the Canal Street Bridge project. Before the vote, Gibson thanked state and local officials working across the river to secure additional dollars, saying, "Before we vote, I do want to thank Lieutenant Governor Delbert Hosemann, who was here recently, who has helped us very much in getting these funds, who has been now working with officials in the state of Louisiana to help secure the additional funds needed. I also want to thank Vidalia Mayor Buz Craft and also Representative Travis Johnson, who represents Concordia Parish in the Louisiana legislature — they have also been working with officials in the state of Louisiana. We are getting encouraging news."

The agreement marks a second $500,000 state appropriation tied to the bridge project, reflecting an ongoing cross-state effort between Mississippi and Louisiana officials to line up matching funds. Gibson did not specify a timeline for when Louisiana's contribution might be finalized.
