Natchez raises self-insurance stop-loss cap to $105,000

The Board of Aldermen approved an amended agreement raising the threshold at which the city's Samaritan Fund program covers high-claims employee health costs.

At the recent September meeting, the city clerk presented the final item on the clerk's report: a request for approval of an amended exhibit A to the 2024 agreement with the Samaritan Fund program. The clerk described the fund as a separate insurance policy available to high-claims employees, distinct from the city's self-insured plan. "The cap was 100,000 whereas it has been increased now to a cap of 105,000," the clerk told the board. The board approved the amendment.

The Samaritan Fund agreement allows employees with especially high medical claims to seek coverage outside the city's self-insured policy, a structure the city adopted in 2024. Raising the stop-loss cap by $5,000 shifts the point at which that separate coverage applies, a change with direct budget exposure for the city's health plan. It was not stated at the meeting whether the increased cap changes the premium costs the city pays into the program.
