Mississippi nonfarm jobs reach record 1,199,800 in August; unemployment at 3.4 percent
Mississippi had a record 1,199,800 nonfarm jobs in August, and the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.4 percent, the lowest since September 2024, according to a Sept. 18 announcement from Gov. Tate Reeves’ office.
The governor’s office said $86 billion in new private-sector investment has been announced since Reeves took office. It also said Mississippi ranks second nationally in growth in job openings since 2020, at nearly 20 percent, and second in household income growth during his tenure. These rankings are the governor’s office’s claims; the release does not detail the underlying data.
The announcement coincided with Hitachi Energy’s plan to invest $528 million and create 654 jobs in Copiah County, which the release described as the company’s largest investment worldwide.
“This has been another historic week for Mississippi,” Reeves said. “This is Mississippi’s time.”
