Mississippi Health Department keeps costs down

State Health Officer Dr. Daniel Edney said the Mississippi State Department of Health has not requested an increase in its operating budget for three consecutive legislative sessions, crediting internal cost management and new revenue streams.

"This last legislative session was our third session where we did not ask for any increase in agency operations," Edney said on the department's Health Talk Mississippi podcast. Edney said state-level per capita funding for the department has risen from roughly $15 to nearly $30 over four years, and that the agency has offset costs through fee-based programs, including background checks and cannabis and health care regulatory fees.
