Local School District Failing Special Needs Kids

COLUMBUS — The Columbus Municipal School District is operating under two active state corrective action plans after a Mississippi Department of Education monitoring visit found widespread noncompliance in its special-education program, the district's special programs director told the school board Monday.
"MDE later issued findings required the district a corrective action plan and currently we are completing the final evidence review for that process," the director said, adding that a review found findings in more than half the student files examined. The district also has separate open findings tied to evaluation and early-intervention timelines. Corrective evidence is due to the state by August 31 and December 5, 2026.
