Jackson City Council considers $9.6 million fire truck purchase

The council reviewed an order to let Mayor John Horhn buy new fire trucks and apparatus for the Jackson Fire Department under a state master agreement.

At the council's regular meeting on October 20, 2026, members took up an order authorizing the mayor "to purchase, under master agreement, State Contract No. 8200060945, with Rosenbauer South Dakota, LLC, Trucks, Inc., fire trucks and fire apparatus for the Jackson Fire Department, including five Rosenbauer Boss 1 pumpers fire apparatus and two Rosenbauer King Cobra trucks, in an amount not to exceed $9,612,416.00." The item appeared on the meeting agenda as part of the council's regular business.

It was not immediately clear from the agenda whether the council gave final approval to the purchase or how the nearly $9.6 million would be financed — whether through the general fund, bond proceeds, or a lease-purchase arrangement also listed on the agenda.

The size of the purchase, routed through a single vendor under a state contract, is well above routine city procurement. Residents and watchdogs are likely to press for details on how the state contract pricing was reached and which funding source the city intends to use before the deal is finalized.
