Jackson official cites $1 million in new public works equipment despite budget deficit
JACKSON - A city official told the Jackson City Council Tuesday that the city has purchased more than $1 million in new public works equipment even as officials have acknowledged a budget deficit.
At the Sept. 2 FY2027 budget public hearing, an official identified in the meeting only as Chief Operating Officer Peter Taylorson — a name and title city staff have not confirmed — addressed the council after being thanked by the presiding officer, identified as President Hartley. "Despite reducing this budget, I want to assure the public that we are continuing to prioritize public works. We now have over a million dollars in new equipment," the official said.
The remarks came after West Jackson residents used the same public hearing to press council members for more funding and staff to address street repairs, drainage problems and blight they said have gone unaddressed for years.
The gap between the official's spending claim and residents' complaints about unresolved infrastructure issues is the kind of discrepancy that draws scrutiny when a government reports a shortfall while announcing a large purchase. Council members did not immediately respond to residents' requests during the hearing, according to the meeting record.
