Jackson has overspent - admits official

JACKSON — Jackson's chief administrative officer told the city council on Sept. 16 that the city has overspent its budget in both the current and prior fiscal years and cannot yet confirm its true reserve balance because outside audits remain unfinished.
"The budget has been overspent in 24 and 25," he said, adding that roughly $6 million would need to be transferred out of the fund before any surplus could be counted. The disclosure came as the council debated whether it could safely tap reserves to fund new public-safety hires.
