Jackson Council Meeting Descends into Disorder
Jackson Council Meeting Erupts in Disorder After Vulgar Remark on Dais
A Jackson City Council meeting broke down into shouting and a brief physical disturbance Nov. 3 after a council member directed a vulgar insult at a female attendee, prompting the council to recess twice before the night ended.
The exchange came after a vote on an agenda item, according to meeting recordings. A council member identified in meeting records as Kenneth Stokes, responding to remarks that he said referenced his mother, said on the dais, "Now she did mention my mama. My mama taught school. And she was a good lady. Now I don't fight women. And I never fight them. But I cut that b\\\\ out." The remark was followed by raised voices and a brief physical disturbance among council members and others present, according to the recording.
The council then voted 4-3 to recess for an hour, according to a draft account of the meeting that has not been fully verified against the video. The meeting later reconvened and voted again, 4-1, to recess until Thursday at 10 a.m., the same account states. The names of those who voted on each side, and the identity of the colleague Stokes was addressing, have not been confirmed.
The episode is notable on its own as an on-the-record outburst by a sitting council member against a female colleague, followed by disorder on the dais and a contested vote to recess — the kind of open conflict within a governing body that draws scrutiny regardless of the underlying policy matter being considered at the time.
