Washington County Board Delays Motorola Radio Contract Vote

Supervisors withheld approval of a two-year, $112,364.76 service contract for the county's emergency radio system until officials produce written proof that Motorola is the only available provider.

The matter came up at the Washington County Board of Supervisors' regular meeting Oct. 5 in Greenville, where a county official identified only as James — his full name and title unconfirmed — presented the proposed agreement. "And it's a two-year agreement, $112,364.76," he told the board, describing the contract as covering network monitoring, hardware replacement and system patching for the county's Motorola-based radio network. The county attorney said the board should see a sole-source letter from Motorola "through an abundance of caution" before signing off. James said he did not have the letter with him but would provide it, and the board declined to finalize the contract in the meantime.

The contract had been presented as sole-source, meaning no competitive bids or quotes were sought from other vendors. No such letter from Motorola was available when board members asked for it at the meeting. The board's decision to hold off until the documentation is produced keeps the six-figure, taxpayer-funded agreement unresolved pending further review.
