Greenville Council Approves $98,000 Emergency Sewer Repair
The Greenville City Council voted to pay for an emergency sewer repair using city cash reserves rather than folding the work into an existing contract.
The decision came at the council's regular meeting Sept. 15, 2026, after officials said a gravity sewer line serving more than 280 customers in the Countrywood Subdivision area needed immediate attention. A speaker presiding over the discussion, identified in meeting records as Mayor Errick Simmons though the attribution has not been confirmed against the recording, told the council, "I know we're saying the same thing, but I don't think the possibility of getting the money back or any of these options outweigh the need of those customers getting the relief they need for senators. We need to go full. We need a recommendation what you want to do. And let's do it."
The council then approved the $98,000 repair, choosing the option that would get relief to customers faster over one that might have qualified for federal reimbursement.
The repair represents unplanned public spending drawn directly from city cash, with no guarantee of getting the money back. Officials weighed that cost against the urgency of restoring service to the more than 280 customers affected in the Countrywood Subdivision area.
