Gautier Property Taxes to Rise
Gautier city manager tells council property tax millage will rise for first time since 2019
The Gautier City Council held a public hearing on the fiscal year 2026-2027 municipal budget, at which the city manager said the property tax rate would climb for the first time in seven years.
At the Sept. 16 hearing, the city's manager — introduced by the presiding officer as the city manager, though captions from the meeting render his name three different ways — addressed the council on the proposed budget. "The last time that the millage was increased was in 2019. I'm going to repeat that. The last time the millage was increased was in 2019," he said. City figures presented at the hearing showed total millage rising from 43.0 to 45.20 mills, with the increases directed to public safety and debt service, while general fund and library millage remained unchanged.
The freeze followed years of stable rates even as costs rose. The city's own presentation tied the increase to 30.6% cumulative inflation since 2019 and quantified the effect on homeowners, saying a home assessed at $100,000 would see roughly a $22 annual increase under the new rate.
