Fund Universities based on performance, says Senator
By The Wire · July 13, 2026 ·
State Sen. Nicole Boyd, who chairs the Senate Universities and Colleges Committee, pressed the case for tying more Mississippi university funding to performance in a July 13 SuperTalk Mississippi interview.
Boyd criticised the Institutions of Higher Learning board's emerging plan — which the lieutenant governor recently called inadequate — noting it would base only about 1% of the roughly $900 million university budget on performance. She said the Senate passed legislation last year, which stalled in a House committee, that would have shifted about 75% of funding to a performance-based formula over three years, modelled in part on Tennessee. IHL is expected to hold meetings on a new formula in September.
