Council shifts $600,000 emergency-planning fund through police budget to add firefighters
The Jackson City Council voted at a special budget meeting Sept. 16 to redirect $600,000 from a Grand Gulf emergency-planning fund into fire department salaries.
Councilman Foot offered the amendment, moving the money through the police department's capital outlay line before shifting an equal amount into fire department personnel costs. "So, I move that we move the $600,000 that's ... on the Grand Gulf emergency planning ... to the Jackson Police ... into their capital outlay line, and we're going to take $600,000 from the capital outlay of JPD and move that to the personnel services for the fire department," Foot said. The transfer is intended to fund roughly a dozen additional firefighter positions.
Some council members raised concerns during the discussion that the money being redirected is a one-time fund, not a recurring revenue source, while the firefighter salaries it would cover are an ongoing personnel expense. That mismatch, colleagues warned, could create budget pressure in future years once the one-time transfer is spent down and the city must find another way to cover the added salaries.
