Five New Patrol Cars for Hinds County
Hinds County Sheriff requests $262,380 purchase of five patrol vehicles
Sheriff Tyree Jones asked supervisors to approve the purchase of five new patrol SUVs, with half the cost to be reimbursed by a state grant.
At the Hinds County Board of Supervisors meeting on Nov. 2, 2026, Sheriff Tyree Jones brought the request before the board as an agenda item. According to the meeting minutes, Jones said: "Request a motion for approval to purchase (5) 2026 Ford Police Interceptor Utility vehicles. The cost per vehicle is $52,476.00 totaling $262,380.00. The total amount will be reimbursed 50% by the MSDPS when submitted for reimbursement. The grant will be reimbursing $131,190.00. Funds will come from vacant Sheriff Department PINS."
The request outlined a total purchase price of $262,380 for the five vehicles, with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety reimbursing $131,190 once the county submits for it. The remaining county share would be drawn from funds tied to vacant positions within the Sheriff's Department.
The item represents a named, line-item spending commitment split between a state grant and savings from unfilled department positions — the sort of public expenditure Mississippi readers typically expect local boards to track, even when it draws no opposition.
