Councilman Questions Police Staffing Savings at Special Meeting

A Jackson councilman identified in meeting records as Davis said unspent police and public-works payroll created transfer savings but warned the money should not come at the cost of fewer officers on patrol.

At a special Jackson City Council meeting Oct. 1, 2026, the councilman said $2.2 million was being freed from the police department and $3.2 million from community service because "there were not as many employees in these departments as we had planned." He said the city "desperately need\[s] more sworn officers and more officers on patrol 24 hours a day," calling policing "a dangerous job" and "not an easy job." He added he was "not very happy about saving $2.2 million if those savings come at the cost of fewer police officers on patrol." The council's handling of the transfer was part of discussion at the meeting; the speaker's identity has not been independently confirmed.

The figures point to more than $5 million in funds available for transfer because the police department and public works have vacant positions. That leaves Jackson short-staffed on sworn officers even as unspent payroll from those vacancies is reallocated elsewhere in the budget.
