End Recycling Operation - says Mayor
By The Wire · ·
CLEVELAND — Cleveland's mayor called for immediately ending the city's in-house recycling sorting operation, saying the labor cost of running it outweighs the revenue it generates.
During a FY2027 budget work session, the mayor noted that city employees — whose pay includes PERS retirement contributions and health insurance — spend significant time by hand sorting and grading recyclable material, while the city collects only a small return, largely from aluminum cans. 'We need to get this — this needs to be taken off immediately,' the mayor said.
City staff said they are researching contractors who could take over pickup and processing instead.
