DeSoto County Schools Fund Balance Falls 5% as Spending Outpaces Revenue
HERNANDO — The DeSoto County Board of Education's finance officer, identified in the meeting only as "Ms. Hannah," presented the district's June 2026 financial statements at the board's Aug. 6 meeting, reporting a decline in the general fund balance from the previous fiscal year. "The preliminary fund balance for all general funds is at 190,444,879, which is 5% less than the FY25 balance being at 200,361,164," she told the board during the financial officer's report.
Hannah also noted that general fund expenditures were running about 9% ahead of the prior year, while revenues had grown only about 1% over the same period. Following the report, the board voted to approve the district's statement of revenues and expenditures and combined balance sheet for June 2026.
The gap between rising expenditures and slower revenue growth accounts for the drop in the fund balance, which represents money available to the district beyond its regular operating revenue. The figures were presented as preliminary, and the board's vote to approve the June financial statements formalized the numbers as part of the district's official fiscal record for the meeting.
