Department of Health to pilot weight-loss medication

By The Wire  ·  August 3, 2026  ·

The Mississippi State Department of Health is piloting an obesity treatment program in four or five counties that includes prescription weight-loss medication as an option.

"We're looking at an evidence-based multidisciplinary approach to obesity management, including pharmacologic intervention where appropriate, including GLP-1s if appropriate," State Health Officer Dr. Daniel Edney said on the department's Health Talk Mississippi podcast. Edney said the program pairs medication with nutrition education, including guidance for patients using SNAP benefits, and is intended to address obesity as what he called the state's leading population health challenge.
