Data Center Moratorium still in place - Jackson
Jackson city attorney says data-center ordinance still unfinished
Jackson's city attorney told the City Council on Nov. 3 that his office has not finished drafting a regulatory ordinance for data centers, with a citywide moratorium on the industry set to run until April 2027.
Addressing the council during a regular meeting, city attorney Drew Martin said his office had "continued to try to draft an ordinance that takes into consideration the various concerns that have been expressed by the council members and by residents." He said, "we're not quite there, although I think we can get a structure in place to give to the council as soon as we can get a few free hours to finish it up," adding he was "hoping to get that done this week, trying hard to get that done this week."
Martin's comments came nearly four months after the council approved the moratorium. He indicated any data-center project in Jackson would still need to go through zoning clearance and site-plan review, rather than being guaranteed tax abatements, underscoring that the city has yet to put a formal regulatory framework in place for the industry.
