Data Center Debate Heats Up

By The Wire  ·   ·

OLIVE BRANCH - Mayor Adams told the Board of Aldermen the city has spent four months drafting a restrictive data-center ordinance expected to come before the board later this month.

At the Olive Branch Board of Aldermen's regular meeting on Aug. 4, Mayor Adams addressed residents' concerns about a proposed industrial rezoning by describing the ordinance the city has been preparing. "It's a very restrictive ordinance and very candidly one would not even go on this property that's being discussed ... we have been working four months on a plan for data centers," Adams said.

Adams told the board the ordinance is expected to be taken up at the Aug. 18 meeting.

The ordinance would represent a live regulatory action affecting how and where data centers can be built in Olive Branch. By the mayor's own description, the measure would be restrictive enough to bar data centers from the property under discussion at the Aug. 4 meeting. The full text of the ordinance had not been made public as of the meeting, and its actual scope will not be confirmed until it comes before the board on Aug. 18.
