Data Center Debate Heats Up - Jackson

Jackson councilwoman questions push to repeal data-center moratorium early

A Jackson City Council member publicly challenged a colleague's effort to end the city's data-center moratorium ahead of schedule during the council's Nov. 3 regular meeting.

Councilwoman Clay, asked why the council was moving to act before the moratorium's expiration, which a city attorney has cited as April 2027. "So why are we rushing to take action before April or before 2027 to do anything?" Clay said, according to the meeting transcript. She noted that Councilman Stokes had placed the repeal on the agenda but was not present at the meeting to discuss it. "I think at some point we all need to be held accountable as council people, and we need to work toward doing what's right by the city," she said. No vote on the repeal took place at the meeting.

Public disagreements between council members over timing on policy changes, particularly one sponsor's absence from a meeting on his own proposal, are the kind of exchange officials and observers watch for signs of real division behind a vote, rather than routine procedure.
