County Health Consolidation Coming
Health Department reorganizing county offices after state declined funding
State Health Officer Dr. Daniel Edney told the State Board of Health the agency's restructuring of county health departments traces directly to a 2023 legislative decision not to provide additional funding.
Edney gave the update during the board's quarterly meeting on Oct. 14, as part of his State Health Officer's report. He said lawmakers left the department with a stark choice three years ago. "We've been working on that since the legislature pretty much told us to when they opted not to find the county health departments in 2023," Edney said. "You know, that pretty much said we either need 10 million just invest in the county health departments or I've got to reorganize. And the reorganization's going well."
Edney did not detail specific counties affected during the portion of the meeting captured.
The reorganization has been converting some county health offices into what the department calls "access points," a tiered system in which smaller counties may lose full-service clinics while the state funds transportation for patients to larger regional facilities. The shift illustrates how a state funding decision can reshape the delivery of public health services in rural Mississippi, with the practical effects likely to vary county by county as the restructuring continues.
