MCCOMB - McComb animal shelter director proposes mandatory microchip ordinance to replace pet tag law
The director of the McComb Animal Shelter has asked city officials to replace the current pet tag requirement with a mandatory microchipping ordinance that would also raise more money for the city.
At the Board of Mayor and Selectmen's work session on September 1, the shelter director told board members, "I would like to actually replace the city tag ordinance with a city microchip ordinance, which would help us create more revenue because we could purchase the tags at a reduced cost around $5. And we could charge... $20." The proposal would replace the existing $5 tag system with a required microchip, purchased by the city for about $5 and sold to pet owners for roughly $20. Board members asked that pets already microchipped by veterinarians be exempted from paying twice. The matter was referred for further review rather than acted on immediately.
The proposal would add a new city mandate on pet owners while generating additional revenue through the fee difference between the chip's cost and its sale price. No formal vote to draft an ordinance was reported.
