City's Tornado Siren System Failed

HORN LAKE — Mayor Stokes told the Board of Aldermen Tuesday that the city's tornado warning siren system failed entirely during a recent storm, prompting a review that uncovered aging equipment and technical faults in both city- and county-maintained sirens. "During a recent storm, none of the emergency warning sirens activated. Upon further investigation, we discovered malfunctions affecting not only the two sirens maintained by the city of Horn Lake, but also the two sirens maintained by DeSoto County," the mayor said. The board then voted unanimously to begin bidding on five additional outdoor sirens, with about 85% of the cost expected to be covered through interest earned on the city's banking relationship, an official told the board.
