Biloxi Councilman Questions Sports Complex Performance
BILOXI - A Biloxi councilman, Anthony Marshall, said the city's $5.1 million AJ Holloway sports complex is underperforming compared with similar privately run facilities.
During an Aug. 11 budget workshop, the councilman, told colleagues, "$5.1 million for a facility that by any other means under anybody else's management will be making way more money. You're asking us to accept what which what we're receiving. And no one up here runs that facility, but you you're the one. So if you don't have a reason for it, if you don't have an understanding for it, if you don't have a plan for it, let us know." The remark came as the council reviewed proposed cuts to tournament hosting and staffing at the complex.
The city built the complex with the expectation it would generate new revenue. The councilman's comments put on record a sitting official's concern that the facility, funded with taxpayer money, is not delivering the returns promised when it opened.
