Action over nuisance properties

By The Wire  ·  August 2, 2026  ·

STARKVILLE — The Board of Aldermen voted last week to call the first public hearing on a proposed "chronic nuisance property" ordinance, modeled on similar measures in Tupelo and Southaven.

Presiding over the work session, the mayor said the ordinance responds to properties that "continue to dominate our... police force," adding the city needs "a slightly more stern approach to these properties that are causing us to have continual police presence." The ordinance remains in draft form pending further public hearings.
